“My grandmother was a well known sculptor. Her bronze sculpture of Chandragupta, founder of the Indian state, was commissioned by Gandhi and still stands in the centre of the Delhi parlament complex. Life around her was not without its exotic interludes -she invited me, as a four year old, to tea with Emperor Haile Selasse who happened to be staying with her at the time.
I was enough of a swot to get a scholarship to Balliol, Oxford where I had the first inklings, soon suppressed, that art might have some commercíal potential.
